Find out in which cases you can safely microwave your ceramics

Microwaves are great for cooking food quickly, but sometimes the ceramic we use may not be suitable due to its composition. In this guide we explain which types of ceramics to avoid and why. Follow the simple steps and you’ll be able to create a quick and easy meal in no time.

Can I put ceramics in the microwave?

If you are looking for a quick way to cook a dish or just want to heat up some leftovers, you can microwave ceramics with a few precautions in mind.

Some types of ceramic materials are safe to microwave while others may not be. Always consult the instructions that come with your ceramic plate, bowl or cup.

Most of the elements of our tableware can be put in the microwave, however there are pieces that, due to the type of ceramic they are made of, can suffer cracks with use, or even breakage due to sudden changes in temperature.

In addition, due to the nature of these ovens, the composition of our tableware must be taken into account, as explained below. Therefore it is the manufacturer who has to guarantee its safe use.

Why are there ceramics that cannot be microwaved?

First, let’s see how these ovens work:

Microwave ovens work by using a type of electromagnetic radiation with a specific frequency (2.45 gigahertz GHz, to be “scientific”) that vibrates molecules of water, fat, sugar and other common ingredients in food to produce heat (heat is still vibration of the molecules).

Well, these microwaves when they encounter metal are “reflected”, not as in the case of food that are absorbed. This is dangerous especially if there are sharp or pointed parts, because then between them an electric arc can be produced (that is, a current that “jumps” from one part to another) causing the famous sparks.

It happens that some ceramic pieces may have certain amounts of metal in their composition causing them to overheat. Or worse, they may have metal on their surface, either in the glaze or in decorations, which can cause microwaves to cause “problems”. That is why we must make sure that our plate, cup or whatever is suitable for these ovens and never use them if we see metal elements on its surface and we do not have the manufacturer’s guarantee that the ceramic object is safe.

How to microwave handmade pottery without breaking or damaging it.

When it comes to microwaving your handmade pottery, there are a few things to keep in mind. First and foremost, never microwave any pottery that is susceptible to breakage. This includes fragile ornaments, bowls that are too large or too small for the amount to be served, and cups or plates with intricate patterns or images.

Which ceramic materials should not be put in the microwave.

Some ceramic materials are not safe to microwave because they may break or break down. Certain types of ceramics, such as fine porcelain, should be used with caution to avoid thermal shock. There are some specific ceramic materials that should not be microwaved because of their potential hazards.

When it comes to microwave safety, it’s important to be aware of the materials you’re using and avoid anything that could potentially cause injury. Follow these simple steps and you can safely microwave ceramics without breakage or damage.

7 Tips for microwaving ceramic cups and plates without damaging them.

When microwaving ceramic products, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, always be careful not to overheat them. Secondly, be aware that some ceramics are not microwave safe: do not microwave these materials! Make sure your cup or plate is microwave safe before putting it in the microwave.

Here are 7 tips for safely heating ceramic products in the microwave:

  1. Check that the material has some type of symbol indicating that the part is safe for microwave use.
  2. Be aware of the temperature and exposure time: make sure you do not overcook, for example do not leave a cup of coffee heating at full power for more than 3-4 minutes.
  3. Beware of breakage – be careful not to damage your ceramic product while cooking in the microwave.
  4. Never put in glazed ceramic pieces containing lead.
  5. There are brands such as Pyrex or Duralex that guarantee that their ceramic products are microwave safe.
  6. Avoid heating at maximum power a dish that comes cold from the refrigerator.
  7. If possible, it is preferable to use lower powers and longer times than the opposite.

Why are some ceramics not suitable for microwaving?

Some ceramics are not safe to microwave because they can break. They can heat up too quickly and cause them to crack. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions before using a ceramic item in the microwave. Avoid using bright, brightly colored ceramic dishes in the microwave, as they can overheat.

Ceramic dishes, figures and other pieces with metallic paint, decorations or enamels should not be used in a microwave oven without the manufacturer’s assurance. There are different recommendations from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) on which materials can and cannot be used.

Microwaving ceramics can be a quick and easy way to cook a dish, but it is important to keep in mind that not all ceramic materials are safe for microwave cooking.

How to know if a ceramic dish can be microwaved without a label

We can compare the piece with another one that we are sure is safe. We put them both in the microwave for one minute at maximum power and, being careful not to burn ourselves, we compare the temperatures of each one.

Also an indicator is to heat water in the dish, cup or whatever, as a test and then see if the ceramic is hotter than the water or not. If it is hotter it means that it absorbs heat and is not suitable. It should be at a lower temperature.
